What can a restraining order do?
A restraining order is a court order made by a judge.[2607] It can require someone to:
- Not contact or go near another person, their children, other relatives, or others who live with them;
- Stay away from another person’s home, work, or their children’s schools;
- Move out of another person’s house (even if they live together);
- Not have a gun;
- Follow child custody and visitation orders;
- Pay child support;
- Pay spousal or partner support (if they are married or domestic partners);
- Stay away from any of another person’s pets;
- Pay certain bills;
- Not make any changes to insurance policies;
- Not incur large expenses or do anything significant to affect someone or the other person's property if they are married or domestic partners; and
- Release or return certain property.[2608]
