Am I eligible for Medicare?
When you apply for Medicare, you have to consider whether you will eligible to enroll in each part Parts A and B (and possibly D) or Part C (and possibly D). This is because each Part has difference requirements and rules, and your incarceration affects each Part differently.[1591] If you’re a citizen of the U.S., or you’ve been a legal resident for 5+ years, you may qualify for Medicare if:
- You’re age 65 or older, and you or your spouse has worked and paid into Medicare for 10+ years; or
- You have a disability that qualifies you for Social Security Disability benefits (no matter how old you are); or
- You have permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant.[1592]
