What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are paid out of money collected from Social Security taxes on individual worker’s paychecks.[1679] SSDI is for U.S. citizens and lawfully present noncitizens (legal permanent residents or LPRs) who have earned a certain amount of Social Security credits by working and paying Social Security taxes, but who can no longer work due to a disability.[1680]
